Day 2 (December 26) – Two Turtle Doves

Theme: The Old and New Testaments

Feast of St. Stephen, First Martyr

Opening Prayer

Gather as a family or individually. Light a white or red candle (red for martyrdom on this feast day).

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Lord God, today we honor St. Stephen, the first martyr, who bore witness to Christ even unto death.
Grant us courage to live faithfully and to proclaim Your Word with love.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Scripture Reading

Read slowly and prayerfully:

Acts 6:8–10; 7:54–60 (The Martyrdom of Stephen)
“Lord Jesus, receive my spirit... Lord, do not hold this sin against them.”

Matthew 23:34–39 (Jesus speaks of prophets and martyrs)

Reflection

The two turtle doves symbolize the Old and New Testaments — God's unified revelation of salvation history. Like a pair of gentle, faithful doves, these two covenants work in perfect harmony:

On the Feast of St. Stephen, the first martyr, we are reminded that Scripture is not merely to be read but boldly lived and proclaimed — even at great cost. Stephen's courageous witness echoes the harmony of the Testaments: filled with the Holy Spirit, he saw the glory of the risen Christ fulfilling all that was written.

Questions for Personal or Family Reflection

  1. How do I allow both the Old and New Testaments to shape my daily life?
  2. Where is God calling me to witness courageously, like St. Stephen?
  3. How can Scripture bring peace and unity in my family or community?

Practical Activities for Catholics

  1. Read Scripture Together
Choose one passage from the Old Testament and one from the New Testament. Reflect aloud on how they connect to Christ.
  2. Sing Together
Sing the first two verses of “The Twelve Days of Christmas”:
“...Two turtle doves, And a partridge in a pear tree.”
Follow with a hymn honoring the Word of God, such as “Thy Word” or “Come, Holy Ghost.”
  3. Act of Charity
Share the Word: gift a Bible, read Scripture aloud to someone lonely, or share an encouraging verse with a friend.
  4. Closing Prayer
O Lord Jesus, Word made flesh,
You gave us the Scriptures as a light for our path.
May the Old and New Testaments guide me in truth and peace.
Through the intercession of St. Stephen, grant me courage to live and proclaim Your Word.
    Amen.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

May the peace of Christ, revealed in Sacred Scripture, dwell richly in you this second day of Christmas.
Tomorrow: Three French Hens.
