Day 7 (December 31) – Seven Swans A-Swimming

Theme: The Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit (and the Seven Sacraments)

Vigil of the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God

The seven swans a-swimming from the Twelve Days of Christmas

Opening Prayer

Gather as a family or individually. Light a white candle.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Your faithful and kindle in them the fire of Your love.
Send forth Your Spirit and they shall be created, and You shall renew the face of the earth.
O God, who instructed the hearts of the faithful by the light of the Holy Spirit,
grant that in the same Spirit we may be truly wise and ever rejoice in His consolation.
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Scripture Reading

Read slowly and prayerfully:

Isaiah 11:1–3 (The Seven Gifts of the Spirit)
“There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse... The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. And his delight shall be in the fear of the Lord.”

John 7:37–39 (Rivers of Living Water)
“If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink... ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’ Now this he said about the Spirit...”

Reflection

The seventh gift from our True Love (God) is seven swans a-swimming, symbolizing the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit: wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord — and often linked to the seven sacraments as channels of these graces.

As the year ends on this vigil of Mary's solemnity, pray for a renewed outpouring of the Spirit to guide the new year.

Questions for Personal or Family Reflection

  1. Which of the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit do I most need right now (e.g., wisdom for decisions, fortitude in trials)?
  2. How have the sacraments been sources of grace in my life?
  3. As the year ends, what "waters" in my soul need the Holy Spirit's renewing presence?

Practical Activities for Catholics

  1. Invoke the Holy Spirit
Pray the "Veni Creator Spiritus" (Come, Creator Spirit) or renew your Confirmation promises.
  2. Sing Together
Sing the first seven verses of “The Twelve Days of Christmas”:
“On the seventh day of Christmas, my true love gave to me: Seven swans a-swimming, six geese a-laying, five golden rings...”
Follow with “Veni Sancte Spiritus” or a Pentecost hymn.
  3. Act of Charity
Perform an act inspired by the Spirit's gifts — e.g., offer counsel to a friend, show piety in prayer, or stand with fortitude for truth.
  4. Closing Prayer – Prayer for Day 7
O Holy Spirit, Lord of grace,
Thank You for Your sevenfold gifts,
like seven swans gliding majestically upon the waters of my soul.
Pour afresh into me wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude,
knowledge, piety, and holy fear of the Lord.
Through the seven sacraments, renew and sanctify me.
Guide me into the new year with Your light and power.
Mary, Spouse of the Holy Spirit, pray for us.
    Amen.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

May the Holy Spirit's grace abound in you as the year turns!
Tomorrow (New Year's Day): Eight Maids A-Milking.
