Day 8 (January 1) – Eight Maids A-Milking

Theme: The Eight Beatitudes (Matthew 5:3–10)

Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God

The eight maids a-milking with cows, from the Twelve Days of Christmas

Opening Prayer

Gather as a family or individually. Light a white or blue candle (for Mary).

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

O God, who through the fruitful virginity of Blessed Mary bestowed on the human race the grace of eternal salvation,
grant, we pray, that we may experience the intercession of her, through whom we were found worthy to receive the author of life,
our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, forever and ever. Amen.
(Collect from the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God)

Scripture Reading

Read slowly and prayerfully:

Matthew 5:1–12 (The Beatitudes)
“Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain... And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying: ‘Blessed are the poor in spirit... Blessed are the merciful... Blessed are the peacemakers...’”

Reflection

The eighth gift from our True Love (God) is eight maids a-milking, symbolizing the Eight Beatitudes taught by Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount.

On this Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God, we see her as the perfect embodiment of the Beatitudes: poor in spirit in her fiat, meek and merciful, pure in heart, and the ultimate peacemaker as Mother of the Prince of Peace.

Questions for Personal or Family Reflection

  1. Which Beatitude challenges me the most right now, and how can Mary help me live it?
  2. How do the Beatitudes nourish my soul like milk nourishes the body?
  3. As we begin a new year, what "blessed" attitude do I want to embrace more fully?

Practical Activities for Catholics

  1. Honor Mary
Pray the Angelus or a Hail Holy Queen. Consecrate the new year to Mary, asking her to teach you the Beatitudes.
  2. Sing Together
Sing the first eight verses of “The Twelve Days of Christmas”:
“On the eighth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me: Eight maids a-milking, seven swans a-swimming... five golden rings...”
Follow with “Immaculate Mary” or “Hail, Holy Queen.”
  3. Act of Charity
In the spirit of the Beatitudes, perform a humble service: help with chores without being asked, show mercy to someone, or donate food/milk to a needy family.
  4. Closing Prayer – Prayer for Day 8
O Jesus, Teacher of the Beatitudes,
Thank You for the nourishing gift of Your eight blessed teachings,
like eight maids a-milking providing pure spiritual food.
Through the intercession of Mary, Mother of God and model of every Beatitude,
help me to live poor in spirit, merciful, pure in heart, and a peacemaker.
Bless this new year with Your Kingdom's joy.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.
    Amen.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Happy Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, and a blessed New Year!
Tomorrow: Nine Ladies Dancing.
